Mold is considered a toxic substance, and exposure to mold should be avoided as much as possible. Unfortunately, mold can thrive in almost any environment where moisture and oxygen are present, and it can grow on any organic surface. Prolonged exposure to mold can be extremely dangerous, and potentially fatal. Even in the dry climate in the Albuquerque-Santa Fe region, mold can begin within 24-48 hours after a water leak or flooding event. In the more humid regions of southeast New Mexico and West Texas, it can multiply very quickly and become an even bigger mitigation.

Signs of Mold

It is important to understand the symptoms and health effects of mold exposure. It can help you quickly identify these indicators and take immediate action to protect your health, your family, and your home.

  • A musty, stale or earthy odor that begins, particularly after a major rainfall, flooding event, leaky pipes or other water emergency.
  • Appearance of mold: You may notice mold on areas, such as near the pipes by a sink, the wall near a water heater, even the walls under an upstairs bathroom. Even if you don’t see physical signs of mold, you may notice dark stains, bubbled or peeling surfaces in the paint or drywall, or a film on file or walls.
  • Increased allergies: If you or your family members have increased headaches, respiratory distress, congestion or skin issues, mold may be the cause.
  • Condensation: if your home or office suddenly seems more humid or you notice condensation, it may be a warning sign. Homes with basements or where any flooding has impacted drywall should be inspected at the first sign of mold.

Is My Home at Risk?

How do I know if I have a mold infestation? Mold can develop on almost any surface if conditions are right. When building materials like drywall or insulation are wet or have been wet, they are especially susceptible to mold growth. Often, mold growth is difficult to detect – it occurs beneath the surface. You may not know it’s there until the health effects become noticeable. That’s why it’s so important to contact our sister company, American Restoration Water and Fire, for thorough water extraction after a flooding event.
